Hot Spot: Goethe in Weimar

After Stockholm in 1998 the (East-) German town of Weimar is this year's choice as cultural capital of Europe. Weimar's selection is largely based on the fact that the year 1999 has been proclaimed Year of Goethe, to commemorate the birth, 250 years ago, of the famous German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on 28 August 1749.

Goethe spent most of his life in Weimar in the service of duke Karl August of Sachsen-Weimar. The Goethe-Nationalmuseum, including Goethe's residence, and the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv are both located in Weimar.

In the coming months inother German towns the Year of Goethe will also be celebrated.
A large part of Goethe's works is available electronically at the project Gutenberg-DE.
