Hot Spot:
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

On the 11th and 12th March the South-African president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and his wife Graša Machel will come to the Netherlands on a state visit.
During the visit Mandela will receive the gold medal of the City of Amsterdam, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Leyden. These two honours are only the latest additions to a long list of awards that Mandela has already received in the last thirtyfive years, among which the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Mandela, who celebrated his eightieth birthday on the 18th of July 1998, is this year saying goodbye to public politics. In the five years of his presidency he has tried to create the new South Africa. Important in this respect were the activities of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, which not only exposed abuses committed by whites during Apartheid, but also condemned those of Mandela's own African National Congress, as well as those committed by his former wife, Winne Mandela.
