Hot Spot: Johannes Gutenberg (±1400 - 1468)

Profile of Gutenberg

At the beginning of this year he was already declared 'Man of the Millennium': Henne Genfleisch better known as Johannes Gutenberg. In his native city Mainz, and in many other places the world over, the 600th anniversary of his birth will be celebrated.
As the inventor of the printing press, his name is forever linked to the bible printed by him, of which 49 copies are known to exist. One of those copies has recently been made accessible online by the British Library, after the university library of Göttingen had already made its copy available online.
On the Internet Gutenberg's name is mostly associated with the international Project Gutenberg, whose aim it is to make available literary and other texts which are no longer in copyright.
