Hot Spot: EXPO 2000

On 1 June 2000 the first universal world exposition of the new century, EXPO 2000, will be opened in Hannover. Its theme is 'Humankind - Nature - Technology'. The first world exposition took place in 1851 in the Crystal Palace in Londen; and after that at irregular intervals both universal and specialist world expositions have been organized. To the last category belongs for example the Floriade on horticulture, which will be held in the Netherlands again in two years' time.
On Tuesday 6 June the Netherlands will be the centre of attention at EXPO 2000. Queen Beatrix will be present at the official opening of the already controversial Dutch pavilion by the architectural firm MVRDV.
EXPO 2000 closes on 31 October 2000.
