Hot Spot: Presidential elections

On Tuesday 7 November we have presidential elections again: the people of the United States will choose the new inhabitant of the White House for the next 4 years, the 43rd president of the United States. For the next few weeks the battle will be between the Democrat, and current vice-president, Al Gore, and the Republican, and current governor of the state of Texas, George W. Bush.
October is traditionally the month of the television debates. During the next few weeks there will be three, on 3, 11 and 17 October between Gore and Bush, and on 5 October the candidates for the vice-presidency, the Democrat Joseph Lieberman and the Republican Dick Cheney, will face each other.
The battle for the White House can be followed best on the sites of the big American media giants, such as CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post. In the Netherlands the sites of the magazine Amerika and of the NOS are quite useful.
Up to the elections the 'political beliefs' of 'ordinary' Americans will be documented by American students on the Internet in The American Story Project.
