Hot Spot: Geuzen medal 2001

Geuzen monument in Vlaardingen market square On 13 March the annual presentation of the Geuzen medal will take place in the historic church in Vlaardingen city centre. In recognition of their exertions to stop discrimination against the gipsies, the award of the Stichting Geuzenverzet 1940-1945 is this year given to the European Roma Rights Center and the National Sinti Organisation.

The Stichting Geuzenverzet, founded in 1987, is dedicated to the memory of the resistance group De Geuzen (The Beggars), which was active during World War II in the Dutch delta. Each year persons or institutions are honoured whose aim is the maintenance of human values in modern society.

Recently the fate of the gipsies during World War II has been brought to the fore again in the wake of research into the redress of and financial compensation for Jews. Crosspoint of the Magenta foundation is a good starting point when searching information about gipsies on the Internet. For up-to-date news there is RomNews. The Patrin Web Journal gives a good historical and cultural survey of the Roma.
